16 Aug Taps. We picked in the rain and drove back to Tapachula extremely tired. It was a draining day in the field because we worked long and hard with little success. I'm having strong doubts about being able to attain any good sample of snakes this trip, to say nothing of quantifying predator and prey diversity on quadrats! While at dinner it began to rain. The first night it has rained this whole trip! Too tired to night drive, though. Just want to sleep.
17 Aug woke, had breakfast and a long swim. Being somewhat depressed from yesterday, we just decided to enjoy ourselves for 1 1/2 hr. When we drove out to San Jeronimo, we were surprised and excited to see people running up to the car to sell us snakes. Emiliano (who worked quadrats with me) brought me a motet long Drymarchon, dead and somewhat putrid smelling, which he says he caught this morning under leaves. I gave him 50 pesos to build enthusiasm. There were several other snakes, including a Micrurus caught yesterday afternoon. I drove on to
