Seib, R. 1982 Berkeley to Tapachula, Chiapas, Mexico 8 Aug My friend and field assistant, All, 3on Alberts, and I took the night flight from SF to Mexico City. It left at 1:30 this morning; we arrived Mexico City 9:00 local time. The most interesting part of the trip thus far is that the Peso now floated yesterday. At least briefly the exchange rate was 100 pesos/dollar. I changed a hundred dollars the day before at 43/dollar. At the airport here we just got 77/dollar. Arrived Tapachula 13:00, quite hot and sunny and also somewhat muggy from humidity. Ardeli Rental Car had a VW sedan waiting for us. It costs about 1/00 pesos/day + 5.7/km. That's only cheap because they just floated the peso again. Ally and I drove into town and checked into the Hotel Ranico which has very tropical grounds. We have already seen four species of lizards: Utenosaurus similis, Basiliscus vittatus, Ameiva sp. and Tenuidactylus fenatrus. Ally and I had lunch and then passed out for 3 1/2 hrs. until 18:30.
