Sagehen Creek Field Station to Chilcoot (area), Plumas Co., California
4 Oct. high desert consisting mainly of sagebrush. Dave was planning to return to Sagehen, so I set my traps with Lucia Wolf. We set 20 Sherman live traps in single line in desert scrub and baited these with rolled oats. She helped me set may 30 museum specials in a line afterwards. We saw a jackrabbit sitting next to a bush, and although we were only 3-4 m from it, it was not afraid. Finally, Lucia and I and David Good climbed to the top of a large hill and set 4 Tomahawks and 8 Victor rat traps. We went to eat dinner and then returned to check the traps about 21:00. Only one Perognathus parvus was found in a Sherman, nothing in the snap traps. We returned and told stories, drinking cocoa and alcoholic concoctions. A very fine campfire. I finally laid out my bag and slept comfortably -- much warmer than Sagehen.
