M. Russell MVZ, Berkeley, Calif. Feb 26, 1959 Went back to Swan's Ranch W of Tomales, arriving at 3:30 P.M. There has been several days of clear weather following the rains. The moles were working when I arrived with plenty of activity up 'till dark when I stopped watching. Went after them with shovel but had bad luck. Dug out 3, 2 of which were killed. One of the dead ones was a ♀ with 3emb x 20mm. The 1 taken alive is a ♂. Then tried opening a fresh mound, noting the direction of the burrow and waiting for them to return and plug the burfold. On a fresh mound I they'll return to plug the opening within 10-15 min. Tried several times to cut the burrow behind them but somehow managed to miss even when the shovel went in 12" from opening. They seem to be pushing quite a column of dirt ahead of them as they plug the opening. Set two live traps with the same results - dirt pushed into trap but no mole. 3 mi W Tomales, Marin Co., Calif. 13414 ♂ Scapanus alive given away May 13 still alive 101.8g. 13415 ♀ " Skull only ?-35-22 95.8g. 13416 ♀ " Skull only 3emb x 20mm ?-30-21 x78.6g.
