W.C. Russell M.V.Z., Berkeley, Cal. Feb 5 1959 The gadget consists of a stake 4' high with a pencil flashlight bulb mounted on top and 2 batteries on side of stake. Wires lead to two small boards with a treadle set verticle next to opened burrow. When mole works treadle drops back and completed the circuit by striking a nail driven through the board. It was amazing how far one can see a tiny flashlight bulb on a dark night. At least 1/2 mile I would say. I made up a dozen of these signals and returned to Swan's ranch in Marin Co to try them out. Started at dusk to set them and in no time at all was very busy answering the lights. As usual an unforeseen developed to frustrate the idea. The mole would plug the open burrow, turn on the light and then stop working. At least they didn't work any after I arrived on the scene. I did manage to dig out one mole found working before dark.
