W.C. Russell M.V.Z., Berkeley, Calif. Jan 30 1959 Dan Wilhoft and I returned to Marin Co. to try again for live moles. This time tried setting the traps by placing a single trap at R. L. to the main run or on the short side shoot coming off the main run to a mound. Placed a quantity of earth worms in each trap. Jan 31 1959 Chilly night - frost this A.M. Well things have gone from bad to worse. Out of 20 sets 14 had moles worked go under the traps. One mole went in and was killed. Of course this was a pregnant F., just what we are after! Something is very wrong. Since on early trial the moles readily entered. Did a bit of doubling up again on sets, one trap each way in a main line and set trap at bit below entrance to burrow to try and forestall their digging under. Also left out the earth worms. Feb 1 1959 Same story again - the moles now fail to go in the traps. It seems that at this season there simply is a change in behavior. Out of 16 sets - 9 missed, caught 2 alive & 1 dead & 3 not worked.
