W.C. Russell M.V.Z, Berkeley, Caly. Jan 19 1959 Having 3 killed out of 7 taken doesn't look too good for a live trap. However will not pack the bait so tightly in these next time. This may allow mole to get in farther before it springs. This was a very dry year, no rain at all up to 12th of year. Now have had a good storm last past. Jan. and soil conditions are perfect for trapping. Very little sign of mole activity in fields when they were active last spring. I suspect the presence of many mounds be an indication of pregnancy. Since they are beginning to breed snow mounds should appear from now on. Jan 21 1959 Returned to trapping area to try for more moles and make a total of 14 sites all in areas of mounds. Jan 22 1959 Well the roof fell in this time as traps didn't work worth a darn. Took only 1 live mole while 5 had worked around the trap. skull only 13406 & Saponace alive didn't have any young, kept long enough, 182-37-22 74.5g.
