M.C. Russell 3 mi. NNE Canyon, 8400 ft, Yellowstone Park, Wyo. Sept 6 1967. Repeated again have never seen so many gopher workings as here. One can open the burrows with one finger. Have kept 4 traps set in vicinity of the camper and have been taking many young. Finally took a young Redtail hawk. There appears to be a nest full - now on the wing in the area. Am wondering what they fed on, as there are two squirrels out & not many Sitanias. Rained for awhile last night. Very cloudy all day to day. Night was quite warmt - around 50° Sun & hear an occasional pine grosbeak. They'll be sitting on very top of tall conifer - one walks toward it & then it's on top of another tall conifer 100 yds away. One can get exhaustered at this business. Sept 7 1967 From all 54 traps only took 8 Peromyscus maniculatus & 2 Zapus. 10-day we moved going from Canyon to Fishing Bridge & camping finally at Old Faithful. Was hoping to find a good
