Sept 6 1967
In afternoon checked traps & took 1 Cutaneous. In addition I set the remaining 20 traps along another small trickle up slope from the picnic area.
This A.M. hunted up toward Hedges Peak, saw a sharp-shinned Hawk make a pass at a bird and miss. It perched on a limb & gave squeeling calls very much like a Sparrowhawk. Then a Flickers entered the scene. The hawk darted after the flicker flew a zizzag course through the timber all the while yelling his head off. The hawk again pished & the flicker returned & lit on same limb 8' above the hawk. Soon the hawk gave chase again, again without catching the Flickers. This procedure was repeated 4 times. Each time the flicker would return seemingly to egg the hawk on. I finally ended the little game with a shot. Whenever the hawk was perched it would utter these squeeling begging calls. A youngster or no doubt real hungry.
