3 mi. NINE Canyon, 8400 ft., Yellowstone Park, Wyo. Sept. 4, 1967 lodge pole 18"24" diam. Beneath this heavy timber are many seeps with green grass, moss & lots of sedges. Just the sort of place for thrushes; here is when I found the hermit thrush. Saw 2 besides the one taken. One was making a half hearted attempt at singing. This peak consists of a ridge that runs up and ends in a [illegible] of rocky out-cropping. ridge leading up to peak. Proceeded (contoured) up the ridge then cut around under the out cropping. On the southern exposure was a shallow cave protected from the wind & sunny. In it was a 4 point buck hidden down. I was within 20 ft. when each became aware of the other. His reaction was "immediate". Saw about 3 pine grosbeaks near the top - chased them all over the butte before finally getting one.
