Slough Cr, 6300 ft, Yellowstone Park, Wyo.
Sept 1 1967
The jacksnipe taken was a young of
year flushed from the dense meadow
grasses 30 inches high. No bare ground
where it came up from.
Sept 2 1967
Weather has warmed up again so nights
are probably in the 40's. Very little moisture
cold night. Visited 2 lakes W of camp hoping
to find where the flocks of black birds
come from. Found the black birds & then
proceeded to muff my chances at them.
This was a large flock feeding in the
sage brush & grassy hills around the
lakes. There were at least 500 birds
and they were a mixture of Red-wing-
Yellowhead & Brewer. Still having trouble
getting shots at the sparrows that
pop up out of the grass. Worked
around some Doug Firs on low
hills bordering the pot hole lakes
and saw Wt. Bluebird, few Crossbills,
Red-breasted Nut-hatch, Flicker & Wt.
Chickadee. Now can find no sign of
a flycatcher of any kind. Just 3 or 4
ducks on lakes & in such poor plumage
I couldn't identify.
