Slough Cv, 6300 ft, Yellowstone Park, Wyo Sept 1 1967 From the 55 traps set in meadow took 4 Micr., 13apus +2 Sorex in early morning. Left line out during the day and took 10 micratus. The main birds in the willow clumps seems to be yellow throats, young ones hopping all over the place. Also Lincoln Sparrows are numerous, again "many young". In late morning found some Savannah Sparrows hopping around in a gravelly road bed. This evening 2 Trumpeter Swans flew low bow the car and almost immediately 4 Loonkers came from opposite direction. Walked up the slope, open sage brush in spots. Followed a stringer of aspen along a trickle of water. Only saw Lincoln Sparrow, Red-shafted Flicker + House Mun. Put up a coyote - it ran to a knoll 150 yds away and sat on its haunches while I passed. As I write in the evening not a single note of a bird is to be heard. Above sun are Marsh Hawk over the meadow. I repeat 'tis curious with warm evening, air full of insects, and not a bat to be seen. Pulled in the mouse traps, to concentrate on birds tomorrow.
