W.O. Russell Yellowstone Park, 3 mi W Gardiner, 5400 ft, Montana. Aug 24-25 1964 Have been patrolling the small aspen groves in the vicinity of the spring that waters this place. In and around the willow thickets seems to be the place for most of the birds. All the Empidonax are scattered through the aspens. They are actively feeding, rarely utter a note and don't seem perch very long. One has to chase them. This morning Aug 25 watched a coyote, 200 yds, barking for 10 minutes. Was using field glasses & picture was excellent as sun was just starting to hit the animal about 7:15 A.M. It always raised its head-muzzle pointing skyward when barks were given. It always faced N, down slope toward the river when barking. From time to time it would shift positions by about 20 ft. It was always on all 4 feet, not sitting on haunches. While coyote was going I had two antelope in sight at some 300 yds.
