W.C. Russell Yellowstone Park, 3 min W Gardiner, 5400 ft., Montana Aug 20 1964 Was returning to camp across Sage & rabbit bush covered flat within 300 yds. of house & put out a coyote. Mrs. R said one had been larking around 9:30 AM. Very fine looking animal, large & well furred. Aug 21 1964 #14367 Empidoney was quietly sitting in an aspen at the spring that supplies this ranch house with water. This small patch of aspen or 1/2 doz Douglas Fir is a very good place to wait for birds. Found the Cross-bills coming to feed on new cones in the Doug Fir. In fact this year must be some sort of a record for cone production. Every tree has cones all over lit from the lowest limbs to the tip. Aug 22 1967 Hunted up slope in practically pure stand of Doug Fir with just an occasional Quimper. For 2 hrs. never find a shot. Only Nutcrackers seen so had to drop back to vicinity of the spring in order to get any birds. St. N. chickadee was busy carrying insects to young in a live aspen. Seems
