M.C. Russell Yellowstone Park, 5400 ft., 3 mi. N. Gardiner, Mont. Aug 20 1967 a few willow clumps, wild current, and some unidentified weeds as an understory. For the most there are no thickets. I watched & listened and saw no Sapsuckers or woodpeckers in this grove. The Curve, 14365 was giving its long buzzing note. The 2 Empidonax taken 14363-14364 were fairly quiet. I still haven't gotten an occasional single note tied to which bird as yet. Saw half dozen shed elk antlers & several 4 point deer antlers. No animals in area at this season. Flush a pair of Lazuli bunting, the ? was carrying food. They were real agitated as though they still had young in a nest. Curious thing is lack of bats here at ranch. Warm evenings - plenty of insect life and haven't seen a single bat. 35 mouse traps left second night at pond yielded 5 Microtus - Peromyscus maniculatus & 1 Zapus. Only Audubon Warbler seen so far in way of warblers. Oh yes Polkies are widely scattered but hard to get.
