W.C. Russell Yellowstone Park, 3 mi. W Gardiner, 5400 ft., Montana. Aug 19 1967 Took 5 Microtus & 11 Peromyscus maniculatus. As one expect they were in their respective habitats, mice in the sedge & Peromyscus on dry slopes. Left 36 traps all day in the sedge & had 2 more Mice in afternoon. Hunted in other patches of Aspen & Doug Fir. Found a pair of Tree Swallows coming to a hole in a live aspen. The Empidonax 14347 was taken from top of tall dead Doug Fir. It was giving a few single notes. The single Red-breasted Nut hatch came to Pigny Owl calls. It is a young of the year, Blue Grosbe are everywhere, young birds 1/2 to 3/4 grown. Saw 1 Sparrow Hawk & heard a nest of young in large Doug Fir. Aug 20 1967 Scouted a large aspen patch up Stephen Creek, some 600 ft. higher than camp. Amazing how one could come into the midst of this huge grove, stand there for long periods and scarcely hear a bird. This grove is uniform in size (I say 8"-11" diam. and tall grace
