J.C. Russell 10 mi. W Carby, Modoc Co., Calif. June 10 1958 I called up a Horned Owl and took him myself. Though the foliage was wet from afternoon rains, the owl talked pretty good. One mole trap had been pulled bad door hung up on a rock. So far this is 4 moles for 5 spring traps. Mighty good average spring trap. June 11 1958 No mole activity at traps last night too much rain yesterday I guess. Broke camp this A.M. and drove to Burney and made camp just a stones throw N of Hatchet Summit. This is 7 mi. W Burney, 4300 ft. Talked with the Highway maintenance man who lives at Hatchet summit. I gave calls of Spotted & Flammulated Owls & he claimed he has heard both of them here. However it is now raining merrily at 9 P.M. so there is no owl hunting to-night. Scouted around for mole works and finally managed to get the 3 live traps set. Not very hopeful as there has been so much rains one can't tell which are fresh workings. Besides with all the rain they don't work as much. The Horned Owl had a Peromyscus maniculatus and a Perognathus parvus in stomach. These
