W.A Russell 10 mi. W Canby, Modoc Co., Calif.
June 9 1958
Hunted owls between 10 P.M. & midnight.
Had 2 Flammeulated Owls answer my
calls and Ned Johnson shot one of them.
He was thrilled as this was his first
experience with this bird. The second owl
flew before Jim could get a shot off. It
was a beautiful dark, quiet night.
This general area has more miles of perfect
Flammulated habitat than any place I
have seen.
June 10 1958
Had 2 more Fignny owls answer my
calls this A.M. Hook 1 of them from
a juniper. The owl being only 20' above
ground. He answered my calls when
I was 200yds. away. Had a momentary
glimpse of a coyote on hill S of Cedar
Springs. Flycatcher #13324 was taken
from top of Cedar some 50' above ground.
Heavy thunder showers in afternoon and
wondered what the Owls would do on
a wet overcast night. However, the stars
came out and away we went. Jim,
Ned & I walked for 2 hrs. - 10 P.M. till
mid-night. We heard 2 Flammulated +
3 Horned Owls. Called up a Flammulated
Owl for Jim to shoot - his first one.
