Mont.
July 1966
Have had rat traps out on top of logs
a edge of logging clearing for several days,
trying for a flying squirrel. To look to low.
Yesterday set out rat traps on top of logs
& line of mouse traps beneath logs through
a virgin stand of Western Red Cedar with a
few Doug. Fir mixed in. Mostly ferns
covering the ground.
While setting traps through this
beautiful island of timbers found
lots of snow plugs made by
gophers. Could not find any fresh
workings. Now it has rained all after-
noon which will make the location
of workings more difficult. Cant recall
ever seeing gopher (Thomomys) working
in a pure Cedrea stand of heavy
timber.
