W.C. Russell N Fork Yaak River, 5000 ft., Lincoln Co., Mont. July 1966 Have had rat traps out on top of logs a edge of logging clearing for several days, trying for a flying squirrel. To look to low. Yesterday set out rat traps on top of logs & line of mouse traps beneath logs through a virgin stand of Western Red Cedar with a few Doug. Fir mixed in. Mostly ferns covering the ground. While setting traps through this beautiful island of timbers found lots of snow plugs made by gophers. Could not find any fresh workings. Now it has rained all after- noon which will make the location of workings more difficult. Cant recall ever seeing gopher (Thomomys) working in a pure Cedrea stand of heavy timber. July 3 1966 Dave Conard & I drove down to head of Pete Creek, 4400 ft., where there is a large area dobs of sedge some 12" high. Three roads and small pond covered with water lilies.
