W.C. Rossell 10 mi N Carly, Modoc Co, Calif. June 8 1958 No moles to-day they just didn't work at the traps. Moved one trap to new site and then of course a mole worked at spot where trap was taken from. Moles are really wide spread in this area but practically never make mounds, just run. Called for Flammeled Owls from 9P.M. till mid-night. 4 answered but their head & soul wasn't in the calling. They would give a few notes & quit. Night dark, no snow, some overcast. Also called for Spotted Owls but no answer. June 9 1958 Took another mole this A.M. + one in late afternoon. Now this makes 4 times their traps have sprung & they have caught 4 live moles. I finally have a good trap. It rained last half of night and on into this A.M. - not hard but quite steadily during the night. From 7-10 no rain & Biggy Owls were really calling. Shot at 4 and lost 1/2 of them. Maybe this is a good time to get them to talk - after a rain. Moles still active at normal time even though ground was wet down some. I thought maybe they wouldn't work as much.
