W.C. Rossell Spar Lake, 3200 ft., Lincoln Co Montana June 18 Rather disappointing catch. Took only 9 Peromyscus maniculatus - 1 Microtus sp. + 1 Clethrionomys. The two Microtines taken on slope beneath the canopy of tall trees. Just moss & newly growing fern on ground. Made 3 steel sets in area where a marten ran across the road. Used scent & hung a chickaree & a bird over 2 of the sets. In evening set 40 traps on some logged over land. New trees 10' high on area + assortment of low brush. Still the ground sets cover do not "look mucky." Would say there is not the deep litter one usually associates with heavy cover. The soil is very gravelly. June 19 1966 Took 3 Zapus sp. + 4 Peromyscus maniculatus. Some fishermen gave me the heads & guts of a dog, large tROUT. Used this material as bait on 5 steel sets made for martens. Had some pain to day - not hard but enough to make us police the camp at least.
