W.C. Russell, 10 mi. N Canby, Modoc Co., Calif. June 7 1958 where we are now camped. Here it is a straight pure stand of yellow pine. A few large 200 ft trees but mostly second growth or little stuff. This whole area has been logged. In the immediate vicinity of this campground there are cottonwoods bordering a small stream. On way in here, at McKay Flat we saw 6 Antelopes. Set out my 3 live mole traps in meadow at camp in afternoon. By 6:30 P.M. two were springing and I had 2 moles. This a promising start for this trap. One trapper went few mounds here - mostly shallow holes. Then have been recent rains & ground is still damp. Did some calling for Flammulated Sand Owls after dark and finally got one to answer. It was lower than 10' above ground in a very dense stand of young yellow pines. Never could get an eye shine but it finally flew. June 8 1957 While getting breakfast a Horned Owl called near camp! Leaving the coffee water to shift for itself I took out after this boy. Took me 20 min to finally locate it.
