M.C. Russell June 6 1958 Left Besk at 12:15 P.M. accompanied by Ned Johnson & Jim Anderson, for Modoc Co. Arrived in Redding at 5 P.M. had dinner and drove it to the vicinity of Hatchet Summit 4300 ft - 7 mi NW O'Burney where we camped for night. At 4200 ft. I did a lot of calling for Flammeulated Screech Owls in a good stand of Red Cedar Sugar Pine, Yellow Pine & Doug. Fir. Night over cast-dark & calm. Never got a peep out of an owl. Rained during the night. Turned over some boards, in a meadow alongside of highway, and caught a shrew with my hands. Have another mole trap - this makes about the 7th trap I have tried for capturing alive. The principle of this trap is a rat trap blocked the door on the front end of a fruit can. Set 3 of these traps in meadow. June 7 1958 No working around the mole traps. Drove on to Canby where we talked with Forest Service people. They told me of Cottonwood Flat Camps Ground some 10 mi NW of Canby and this is
