Managed to get one of them on wing between trees. Jun 25 1964 Hunted upstream from camp in virgin timber. This is like being in a vault. So no bird or hear no sound for long stretches of time. All the birds taken were finally stirred up by using Pigney Owl Calls! The Forest Service trail crew say the reason the deer are so numerous in this area is that due to late season snow higher up the deer are prevented from scattering on the higher elevations. It's rather surprising at the lack of woodpeckers in all this timber. Have seen or heard about 2 Flickers, 1 Hairy & no sap suckers of any kind. Set out 25 mouse traps along Bessie Cr. trying for four polisthis, Zapus etc. Caught only 4 Peromyscus maniculatus.
