Bessie Cr, 4600 ft, 10 mi. E Prospect, Jackson Co., Ore. June 23 1964 Rogue River to Prospect. Turned & in town & drove up Bessie Cr to above location. This is a heavily wooded canyon of Hemlock, White Pine, Doug Fir - White Fir & some Sugar Pine. There are small natural meadows scattered along the creek. Up to this elevation some areas have been logged but E from canyon upstream is primitive area & timber untouched. In these tiny meadowes which are very rocky and in logged over areas there are a good sprinkling of gopher mounds. The holes are probably wind around between the pockets as to make it very hard to set a trap. Soil very black in madow, full of humus. Made & gopher sets near camp in meadow. June 24 1964 Took 2 gophers, Tell talpoids Ogress - they have long pen's bones. Hunted up stream from camp. Got 2 Ringy Owl going at same time. Had several wing shots as they crossed from 1 tree to another. These trees are colossal - no chance to see a bird 2/3 up in the trees.
