Y.C. Russell Thomas Cr., 6100 ft, Nason Mts, Modoc Co., Calif. June 11, 1964 Storm broke yesterday afternoon & sun came out to day. What a relief after 5 days of soggy weather. On north facing slopes 4-6 inches of snow. Found a Eutomias curled up on the snow - kept still beating but it died in my hunting coat. Fresh tracks in snow deer seem plentiful - also the small prints of new fawns. Saw coyote tracked in 3 places some 3 & 400 yds apart. Could have been same one or different animals. Took 3 Sphyrapicus from small aspen patches. June 12, 1964 Hunted N from camp on S facing slope of the Thomas Cr. drainage. This is a V deep slope grass, sagebrush, Mt Mahogany & pure stands of white fir. These fir forests are really quite bleak with very little bird life in them. At around 7500 ft. so in the pure white fir is where the hermit thrushes & Sooty Thratchers were taken. So far no white crested Thratches have been seen. Deer tracks plentiful. Saw several tracks of coyotes & brusky grouse in the snow!
