W.C. Russell Shovel Cr., 4600 ft., Siskiyou Co., Calif.
June 5 1964
Left Berk at 6 P.M. with Ned Johnson & Charley Brown in panel GMC truck. Headed for northern Calif. in vicinity of Doris - Siskiyou Co. Made camp on Shovel Creek, at 4600 ft in late afternoon. Sky overcast and looking like rain.
June 6 1964
Started to rain at dark last night & kept up off & on all day. Now 8 P.M., daylight saving time & coming some more. Some thunder & lightning & hail in afternoon.
This is a canyon that had a good stand of Doug Fir, yellow pine, white fir & some Cedars with scattering of cotton woods & willows along creek. Was logged years ago judging from old stumps & now they are demolishing the place with recent logging operations. Ned is interested in Empidonax, chiefly Western Flycatcher. I managed to find one along the creek up stream from where road crossed the creek. Creek is high & very noisy due to run off they say, from melting snow higher up.
