W.C. Russell Strawberry Cr., 8500 ft, Snake Range, White Pine
Co., Nev.
June 27, 1962
Left camp at 6 A.M. intent on collecting
a grouse. Morning dawned with a heavy
wind. Figured the birds would be tucked
away high on a ridge just down on the lee
side out of the wind. Sure enough, put out
2 roosters from two trees in just such
a location. Saw a sight that sounds
a bit strong. I saw 31 deer - 27 of which
were bucks. Killed out 22 bucks in one
bunch. No large antlers in the bunch
but 1 deer had a body the size of a
steer. Oh yes back to the grouse. This
bird had a crop full of pine needles.

Hunted for grouse today but no luck.
June 29, 1962
Returned to Berkeley. Took 12 hrs. from
Ely to Besk.

It turned some white first winter &
a much larger percentage white the
second winter. In fact second winter was
about 75-80% white. Noticeable white in Noo.
& back to brown by Mass. Injury caused
death. Tests visible in up 1963.
