N.C. Russell Strawberry Cr., 8500 ft, Snake Range, White's Pine Co., Nev. June 26, 1962 Hunted down stream & up on N facing slope. Hunted through beautiful country mixed aspen & white fir thickets with small grassy well watered meadows. Thoroughly expected to find something good but no soap. Just the usual winding vases, chipping sparrows and occasional robin. This is one of the finest seasons from standpoint of water, grasses, wild flowers but bird population is very low. Have not seen a single golden-mantle ground squirrel in this canyon. Will not see over 2 chipmunks in a morning's hunt. The Lazuli bunting taken life in or around patches of choke cherry. The Vesper sparrows were taken on open sage slopes. The sage is very low - not a high growth as is found on bottom land. Last night we caught a young weasel in a box trap in camp. Yesterday we saw 2 young together, 40-day no sign of the other guys one. -> see next page.
