Strawberry Cr, 8500ft, Snake Range, White Pine Co.,
Neu
June 25 1962
Left camp early this AM & drove to Sacramento Pass, which is where the Oly to Baker highway goes over the low N end of the Snake Range. On June 3 Ned Johnson & I stopped in this pass, 7154 ft, to listen for birds & Ned heard Gray Flycatchers. So today we went there hoping to find this Flycatcher. Neither Jean Christmas or myself ear heard or saw any fly catcher. Ron Church said he saw one Fly catcher, shot at it & missed.
It last no one heard the call of a single gray Flycatcher. It seems as though every place we go is quieter than the one before. It was deathly silent. I climbed a high hill juniper & pinon & did encounter 4 Clark crowe, no shot. Could hear an occasional Wood house jay but they were cagey. The one taken was in such poor plumage as to be almost worthless. Started hunting at 6 AM and didn't fire a shot till 8 AM when I got the jay. There were a few Bush tits & Black-throated gray Warblers. Heard a couple Spotted Towhees. Took 1 of a pair of Sage Thrashers - the only ones seen.
