W.C. Russell Lexington Co, 8300 ft, Snake Range, White Pine Co., Nev. 19 June 14, 1962 The golden-mantle ground squirrels have come out in last 2 days. Now they are all over the camp. Saw 1 Golden Eagle at head of S Fork of Big Wash. Jumped 1 dus in the Mt. Mahogany. June 16. Snowed 2-3 in, during night of 15-16. Beautiful sight early in the morning. In afternoon it gained too by morning of 17th. Most of the snow was gone. Temp at 6 A.M. June 17th was 33° at camp. Clear in early morning with cumulus clouds in afternoon. No showers here at least. June 18, 1962 Made a climb to ridge N of camp, 11,000 ft. Heard 2 or 3 Nutcrackers but couldn't get a shot. Found some fresh grouse tracks in snow around 10,000 & but never could see a bird. Saw very few little eye high, No Solitaires heard or seen. But how varless & Cassin Finch + Dickcins were present common on ridge. Had just stepped out of camp to start my climb when a Stellar Jay let out a squeak. I managed to hold him off and finally took him. Kicked out about a dozen trees, several broke, all in velvet.
