among the redcedar. Flush'd a grouse
from a fir tree. First grouse I've seen
on this trip. Was passing through a
dense grove of smallish aspen with
a few firs mixed in. Found a sharp-
shinned hawk no more 12' above ground in
a 25' fir. There were several wing feathers
of a Clark crow scattered about beneath
the nest. This is what first attracted my attention.
There was no bird in sight so I gave a couple
of squeeks and the & immediately came in and
perched nearby - giving one call as she arrived.
There were 4 eggs in nest & she had a 15 mm
wound. The blood patch skin was swollen
and there was considerable fat in the area.

Hunted on the SE facing N slope of the S Fork
of Big Wash. This slope has very extensive areas
of Mt. Mahogany. Virginia Warblers were
numerous. The & responded well to squeeking.
Saw a Spotted towhee on this slope. Heard
Stellar Jays 3 times. Have no idea if it was
one bird or more. These Jays act very
strange. One cannot approach them as they
are always on the move and calling. One of
them was heard way up on the slope in
Mt. Mahogany.
