W.E. Russell Snake Cr., 4800 ft, Snake Range, White Pine Co., Nev. June 6 1962 sky I couldn't make out color. But the silhouette & note were right. Saw: 1 White- throated Swift, Pigmy Owl calling does not stimulate smell third ray much. As yet have not had an owl bowers. Saw : Flicker + 1 Hairy Woodpecker. Curious ting but bird life is not plentiful per ack., and individuals of most species are definitely in small numbers. To-date have not seen a carnivore track or dropping. Weather clear most of day but has clouded up in late afternoon + with a breeze it's cold. Though it doesn't freeze H2O at night it's a bit uncomfortable. June 7 1962 Drove up to 4800 ft where the road is blocked by snow + down tree + then walked on up to Johnson Lake at 10,800. The purpose was to look for Rosy Finch. There saw or heard one. The lake lies at the foot of a cirque and looks pretty good for Rosy Finches. However there is one feature this area lacks and that is meadow-like tufts of grass. The place just looks sterile. Certainly there is no vegetation around the rock slides to support Conys.
