W.E.RUSSELL Snake Cr. 2400 ft, Snake Range, White Pine Co., Nev. June 5 1962 of calling for quail. There was a quarter moon that only stayed up for about the first 1/2 hr. of darkness. While still light enough to walk any place without a light and almost immediately after we started calling, a Flammulated Owl answered. He was off some distance & the intervening timber or brush was thick. Then he quit calling so we gave it up. In next 1 1/2 hrs. we took two Flammulatus both in white fir & aspen. In fact both flew to our calls & sat in branches. June 6 1962 Though I know better, started out this morning to hunt grouse. With the usual ending to such maneuvers, ended up with no grouse and not much else. Used the caller several times and once had two bucks come from a W.D. mahogany thicket some 200 yds. away. They crossed an open sage slope & had came up to 60 yds of the rock when I was hiding. Saw 13 deer to-day including a very small wobbly legged fawn. It luffed a faint bleat as it staggered off. Am fairly certain I shot at an evening grouseback. On top of tall tree against the
