W.C. Russell June 2 1962 Left Bess with Ted Johnson in the new GMC truck. This is its first trip. Bound for Wheeler Peak Area of Snake Range in Nevada. Left at 6 P.M. - went via highway 40 to Reno where we changed oil & got fresh vegetables. On to Ely arriving at 8 P.M. When highway crosses Reese River W of Austin saw 1 American Egret. In Eureka we saw starlings on the buildings facing the main street. Wheeler Peak has a heavy mantle of snow, still down to around 6500 ft. I'm sure. Weather cool - broken clouds & threatening rain in spots. In fact it sprinkled in Ely at 9 P.M. June 3 1962 Left Ely & drove to Baker then south & took road up Snake Creek. They are putting in a pipe line up Snake Cr. Cement pipe some 18" diam. to bring water to valley. They say the stream just goes into a shale, leaving very little by time it reaches vally. Had some trouble getting past equipment left parked in middle of road over wake end. Made camp at 8200 ft. in Aspen that are not fully leafed out yet. Above a 1000 ft. higher still have no leaves.
