On Tue Oct 11 the Museum rec. a call from Academy of Sciences, S.F. that there was a stranded whale on beach at Santa Cruz. The workmaster had called the Academy asking if they wanted it. They didn't so called MVZ. I took Mike Pontrelli & Joan Christman & we went to S.C. The whale was stranded N of the wharf where the beach meets the cliffs. The story is that it went aground in the morning when pursued by killer whales. People on the wharf said a school of killer whales were having a time darting at high speed between the piles of the wharf. Since it was afternoon it was decided to fast work removing the whale from the beach, first trying in the morning. I must say the city officials were more than anxious to lend every possible assistance in moving said beast where we could work. On Wed. morning a truck crane perched on the 5 cliff drive directly above said beast on the beach. A cable attached to tail & the animal was hoisted
