M.C. Russell M.V.Z., Berkeley, Calif. Feb 24 1960 3 mi. W Tomales, Marin Co. Calif. had given birth. Skull only 13675 9 Scapanus Took only this one mole and hit her with the shovel. She was so mangled no use to try & measure or weigh. Could tell however she had recently had young. There was very little activity all told, in fact some recent mound systems showed no new workings up to 9:30PM. Wish I could have watched the remainder of the night. In all my digging in the pastures one always finds now earthworms directly beneath piles of cow manure. Yet there is no evidence that the mole sets out these areas to do their foraging. They seem to occasionally go directly beneath a pile of droppings but it seems to be only by chance.
