2 into a camp when one can hear turkeys gobble on the ridge. A pair of noisy Thick bill Parrots have a nest in dead pnaq on slope above camp. At night spotted Owls banking up & down canyon. Curious thing so far have not been able to start at Flamulated Owl calling. This area looks just perfect for them. This is really a sub. range for rattlesnakes. Someone sees or collects that least 1 or more every day. So many faide it's confusing.
July 15 1959
yesterday came on 4 turkeys at the edge of a manganita slope. The one gobbler taken had 400 manganita berries, several leaves of clover & 2 insects in crop. I had heard a gobble gooble in this area 1/2 hr. before at 10:15 A.M. Late in season for them to gobble. These are yearling O's, mostly due to good hatch last year. After a series of dry years the number of old birds is low.
Took a pair of Eared Trogans. These birds had mostly insects, caterpillars, beetles in crops. However each had 2 manganita berries. These birds are usually found in the heaviest
