M.C. Russell Arroyo Mesteno, 7600 ft., Sierra del Nido, Chiv.; Mex. July 9 1959 Our party has changed personnel and split up. Coburn Haskell, Ned Johnson & Bill Hamilton arrived from Burke. To-day Bill Liddicker Dave Taylor & Ned Johnson took off in the International for Aguas Caliente. Now our party consists of Bryan, Hamilton, Leopold, Haskell & myself. We broke camp and moved to W side of Sierra del Nido to Arroyo Mesteno. This is really a beautiful canyon with yellow Pine, White Pine, Douglas Fir, Oaks & Aspen. There are pools of water with fish, not trout in them. We were setting up camp when an Canada Trogon came by giving a weird call. Finally managed to take this bird. It had an egg ready to lay. There was one more egg enlarged and there were 2 follicles. Assuming one follicle for egg in ducks it would appear that the clutch would be three. July 12 1959 Last night Staff & I each took a spotted Owl. The night previously I shot at another & lost it. Counting 2 more we have heard this makes 5 we know of in a distance of 1/2-3/4 mile of canyon.
