W.C Russell 5 mi N Sierra Campana, 700 ft, Chib, Mex. June 29, 1959 Moved to E side of Sierra del Nido to above locality. This is old road that goes through the mountains from Ciudad Chihuahua to Colonia Santa Clara. The vegetation in the wash is a mixture of Willow, Ash, Oak above a lower growth of desert shrubs and considerable dry grass. In fact even if not for grazing, the grass would be dense. July 4, 1959 During this last week the rainy season began and certain amphibians sprouted up like mushrooms. Eleutherodactylus the Barkwing frog started calling from cliff in camp the second night after rains came. They start calling just at or a bit before dark. Then they descend the cliff and we catch them on rubble at waters edge at foot of cliff. This N facing cliff is 35-40' high and their first calling is often from high up on it. We have picked up 9-10 in a distance of 150 ft. of cliff. And there are still several calling at night. Judging from the calls they seem to descend the cliff rapidly - but we have not seen it performed. The water in stream bed consists of discontinuous pools left after the run off of thunder showers. The animal sits quietly and can easily be picked up when covered
