June 17 1959
answering for awhile & then he quit. In
mean time I am trying to sit still and
flies are really bothersome. Had about given
up when he gave a few notes behind
me. Luckily I had some back cover and
turned around just as he came into view.
Only his head showing but that was enough.
Very exciting to take a turkey this way.
it typical stunt seems to be for them
to circle on coming to the call. One nuds
eyes in the back of the head.
Made two more sit stills in vicinity of
camps.
June 18 1959
Found a Rufus-crowned Sparrow nest tucked
in the base of a clump of grass. It had
2 fresh sparrow eggs & 1 Cowbird egg. Both
of these birds are fairly common here.
Turkeys appear to be more plentiful than
deer here. At least we see turkeys every
day - but it is an occasion when we see
a deer. The white-sided jackrabbit is fairly
abundant and they always are seen 2 at a
time. I assume they are pairs.
