June 14 1959 a small mud hole of a pond next to the highway. Stark & I surrounded them and each took one when they went up. They were very thin and feathered badly worn. Of course we carried them in truck and they kicked around camp 'til they were nearly spoiled. We made camp on W side of mts. in Canon del Alamo, 7300 ft., Sierra del Tinto. The country is very dry - no open water except and occasional stock tank. There is a scattered growth of oak & pinon around camp with large open grassy areas interspersed. The ground is very rocky many areas almost covered solid with rocks 6"-15" in diam. with a bit of soil + dry grass between rocks. Some clouds at times and looks like it might rain - but doesn't June 15 1959 Hunted through oaks and into a barranca to east where there are some pines. Jumped / Covies deer. Last night started 1 Screech Owl at camp + took same. This A.M. started 1 Zigmy Owl and took same. Or rather I was talking to it when Alden came along + shot it when it was out of my line of sight
