J. Rodgers -1941 177 Strawberry Canyon, Berkeley, Alameda C., Calif. Jan. 10 Janet Failes, Eugene Eagle, Goddard Silverstein, and I arrived at the northeast side of the stadium at 6:40 am. Street lights were still on and the sky was just lighted up enough that we could see that there were many breaks in the clouds. The roosters were crowing at the poultry station. We walked up the road, and heard our first native bird, a Brown Towhee, about 100 yards east of the poultry station at 6:50. We walked to the botanical gardens, around thru them and back down to the stadium, arriving there at 8:23. The following is a list of species seen or heard during this time: 1. Brown Towhee 2. White-crowned Sparrow 3. Horned Owl 4. Varied Thrush 5 Spotted Towhee 6. Song Sparrow 7. Wren-tit 8. Hermit Thrush 9. Red-tailed Hawk 10. Cooper's Hawk ? 11. Calif. Jay 12 Steller's Jay 13. Ruby-crowned Kinglet 14. Sparrow Hawk 15. Robin 16. Black Phoebe 17. Curve Biskin 18. Calif. Thrasher 19. Bewick Wren 20. Shrike 21. Audubon Warbler 22. Western Winter Wren 23. Busk-tit 24. Plain Titmouse, 25. Gull We saw and heard at least 15 Varied Thrushes, more than I have seen since 1928 when they were common in the Santa Clara Valley.
