J. Rodgers-1940 170B-59 Itinerary, etc. June 26 6 mi. E. Livermore, Alameda Co., Calf. John Chattin and I arrived here at 7:00 am, with picks and shovels, to dig for skinks. We turned over all the loose rocks and picked several tons of rocks out of the ground. All the digging was in the exact place where we have collected skinks on several occasions before. We dug as deep as 2 1/2 feet in some places and 1 1/2 to 2 in many. The ground under * the rocks was very light and soft. A skink could have worked its way thru much of it (*Under the masses of rocks that we picked out). At about the level of the roots there were more holes than anywhere else. There were cracks down among the rocks. The only holes we saw that were definite burrows, were a few tarantula holes. We found one tarantula and about 10 Stenopelmatus. We collected 6 Sceloprus; they were common. We did not find a skink, nor did we find anything that we judged to be a sign of one. Oct. 12 At about 1:20 pm.
