J. Rodgers - 1940 Rana boylii boylii Oct. 12-13 Austin Creek, 80 ft., Mis Cagaders, Sonoma Co., Calif. Yellow-legged frogs were common along the creek. They are highly variable in size which, I suspect, is what one would expect this time 2 year is so soon after the breeding season - which is probably long. Some are smooth gray on the back and some are mottled or blotched. JR 2700 looks much like muscosa. About one-third of the specimens had red in their backs - probably red-leg (disease). Some appeared all reddish brown as a result, and some quite reddish. Where there was not much red on an individual, it was concentrated along the dorsolateral lines. Nos. 2703 (J. Rodgers) and 3655 (Alden Mille) are among the reddest. 298 (Harvey Fuller) has much red in the back.
