J. Rodgers - 1942 Eumeces skiltonianus Aug. 10 Mrs. Vert. Zool., Univ. Cal., Berkeley, Cal. Skink ran out of a small hole about 4" below surface and ran down into the hole he dug. It was immediately followed by three small skinks. He caught all 4, accidently killing two of the young. The adult bit my hand and refused to let go until I forcibly removed her about 30 seconds later. We then dug into the hole and got two more young skinks, making altogether 5 young and 1 adult. The hole these skinks were in was about 1" in diameter and ran back into the bank (made by me as dug) about 4"; it was immediately under a rock that was about 4" thick and whose upper surface projected above ground about "2". The young skinks were very delicate, their viscera showed clearly thru their pale gray bellies and the red scar of the umbillicus remained. The tail color same as live specimens: Tail between Salvia Blue (Pl IX, 49b) and Light Methyl Blue (Pl VIII, 47b). Dorsolateral lines Maize yellow (Pl IV, 19 f); Buff yellow (Pl. IV, 19d) anteriorly. Lateral lines Maize yellow. Sprinkling of brown along median part of dorsal area; otherwise black between dorsolateral lines and on sides. Tip of tail black:
