Eumeces skiltonianus
June 23 Mrs. Xert. Zook, Univ. Caly, Berkeley, Alameda Co., Caly.
On June 21, I am Taggart Cowan, Robert Storer, Milton Hildebrand, Viola Memmler, Joe Marshall, Janet Fails and I collected skinks (Joe spent most of his time trying to collect a Grasshopper Sparrow with his sling shot). 1/2 mi. SE Bald Peak, 1700 ft., Contra Costa Co., Caly. We collected from 8:28 to 9:05 am. and got 18 skinks (see no. 3339-3356 - my numbers). There were many Sceloporus out, but we saw no other reptiles. Janet Fails saw what was probably a young gopher snake.
The only conclusion I can so far draw as to where to look for skinks is the following: Shallow hollows and swails on hillsides and ridges under scattered rocks.
Some places were probably caused by slippage on the hillsides - these hollows are oft anywhere along the hillsides but seem to often be near the top. Others, along are below rock outcrops. This probably does not mean that these places are preferred by the skinks, but probably that they are most accessible there. Other places the skinks can go on down under other rocks, can move ahead under other rocks, or the rocks cannot be moved. Cowan saw a C. lateralis and a dead G. mormon near the new cyclotom yesterday.
