Dicamptodon ensatus
Sept. 15 Mus. Vert Zool. Univ. Calif., Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif.
Color record, from Ridgway, of Dicamptodon
no. 35484, collected near Stephens Camp, Waddell
Creek, Santa Cruz Co., Calif., Sept. 14, 1941. Dark
parts of mottling, Mars Brown (Pl. XV, 13, k);
light parts, Verona Brown (Pl. XX) x, 13'' k).
As I took this salamander in my hand
and held it while comparing it with
my it started emitting mate, from its
vent. It continued for about one minute,
letting up somewhat twice, but increasing
the rate of emission after each let-up. All
together, it must have emitted 10 cc. or more.
This is the first time I have seen this reaction
in a salamander.
