Cnemidophorus tesselatus
Feb 13 Mus. Nat. Zool., Univ. Calif., Berkeley, Cal.
No. 2167, a male from Arroyo Mucho, Alameda County, and
2173, a male from Madera County, we came out about 11:00am.
today. 2173 seems to be in good condition, 2167 is very
thin and inactive. 2173 ate at least 2 mealworms.
2167 ate one larva and fumbled with a pupa but
couldn't seem to get it to start down its throat. I took him
in my hand and let [illegible] two more pupae from forceps
took
and swallowed them with no trouble at all. I offered
him one with some Lansol in it but he refused it. I
opened his mouth and fed it to him then put him back
in the cage, with his chin in the water dish. He lapped
up water for 15 or 20 seconds. 2167 drank more
water several minutes later, after leaving the water dish (1:03 p.m.)
and returning. 2167 perked up considerably, but
is very thin, and still not nearly as lively as
2173.
I have not seen any whiptails out for
at least two months. One or two may have been out
yesterday, judging from slight changes around the
entrance. 2167 is drinking again - after 5 or minutes I
standing near the water dish. He seems to be filling
up on water. It day the sky is hazy, with clouds
above the haze, as indicated by marked fluctuations
in the brightness and where the sunshine thru the haze.
2173 has just shed. The skin on the tail has not been shed
yet. 2173 was still out at 1:10 p.m., but 2167 has
gone in.
