Walter Dalquest and I left Berkeley by Greyhound Bus at
7:10 am. (Pacific Martins), met Phil Merritt in Lafayette and
continued east in his car. We were driving into shining
sun clear to the valley - the sky was clear and the
atmosphere slightly hazy. There was frost in Berkeley
when we left. We found a freshly killed gopher
snake in the road 3 mi. NNW Byron, Contra Costa Co.
The only other snake found was taken from deep
under a rock, 5 mi. S Brentwood. We saw 4 or 5
pairs of Spanish Hawks foraging near the road
between Brentwood, Byron and Stockton. We were
impressed by the beauty of the soft gray males with
black tipped wings & white rump. We saw mountain
bluebirds about 7 mi. E Stockton. Collection
localities and specimens taken at them follow.
